Nightmare days for San Diego allergy suffers

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The raging wildfires that ripped through San Diego's hillsides and open space two years ago now mean a different kind of flare up for those who suffer from allergies.

Doctor Katharine Woessner, an allergist and immunologist with with Scripps Clinic Medical Group, said she has seen a spike in the number of patients looking for allergy relief, including many new patients who have a host of complaints.

Dr. Woessner said there are many good treatment options individuals can buy over the counter, including saline rinses and antihistamines.

"Our gold standard for treating allergic rhinitis is really a topical nasal steroid spray. People get nervous, but they're really quite effective at clearing out the allergic inflammation," she said.

Dr. Woessner also said to help limit exposure, those who suffer from allergies should stay indoors as much as possible.

If heading for a run/walk, Dr. Woesner advised to do that in the evening after the winds die down and when the pollen count is the lowest.
