Local murder mystery featured on 48 hours

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Two of San Diego’s most infamous cold case murders are about to hit the national spotlight. CBS 48 Hours will profile the case of two girls found dead on Torrey Pines State Beach years apart, but with eerie similarities.
For more than three decades, investigators have tried gaining answers to two Torrey Pines State Beach cold case murders. The first was of 15 year-old Barbara Nantais in the summer of 1978. The second is of 14-year-old Claire Hough in 1984. Both teenagers were sexually assaulted, strangled and beaten, and both were murdered in August on the same beach.
“I almost did not make it," said Jim Alt, who was Nantais’ boyfriend at the time.
Alt camped with Nantais on the beach the night they were both attacked, and he survived after days in a coma.
Both women had been slashed in the chest. Investigators believed the same killer was responsible.

A breakthrough came in 2012, when DNA testing on evidence taken from Hough identified two suspects:
-Convicted rapist Ronald Tatro's blood was found on Hough’s jeans.
-Criminalist Kevin Brown's semen was found on Hough’s body.
Brown was a crime lab technician for 20 years for the San Diego Police Department from 1982 to 2002 when he retired. Brown’s wife Rebecca Brown swears his innocence.
"My husband didn't do it, he didn't go after teenagers, I knew they were wrong," Rebecca Brown said.
Detectives say both Tatro and Brown knew each other from frequenting strip clubs and using prostitutes. Tatro died in 2011 in a boating accident in Tennessee, while Brown committed suicide in 2014.

Brown’s wife is suing SDPD claiming detectives botched the case, which drove her husband to suicide.

The 48 hours investigation "Blood in the Sand" will be on CBS at 10 p.m.
