OCEAN BEACH (CBS8) - An Ocean Beach resident is hoping surveillance video will help catch a man who stole several hundred dollars worth of packages off his front porch.
Jon Gross was on vacation Saturday when the packages were delivered. They stayed on the porch until Sunday when a man walked up and carried them away.
"I'm just disappointed. I really am disappointed. The value isn't that important, but it's the principle of it," he said.
Gross was alerted to the theft by his surveillance system, which notifies him when there is movement around the house.
At first, Gross though ti was a thoughtful neighbor moving his stuff out of site, turns out a complete stranger committed the brazen crime.
"I got the cameras because there is a lot of crime going on in Ocean Beach right now. I just wanted to be vigilant and have some cameras for myself for protection," he said.
Gross says the packages were Mother's Day gifts.
Gross' neighbor, Rich Shamlian feels the same way and now wants to put cameras on his property because of it. Shamlian told CBS News 8 he too has been a victim of crime. He said he has had items stolen from backyard.
According to Shamlian, the problem has to do with too many transients in the area.
