Officer-involved shooting closes streets in Lomita

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Someone opened fire on a plainclothes detective in the Jamacha-Lomita neighborhood, which left the lawman unscathed but his unmarked car riddled with bullets, authorities said Tuesday.
The detective was investigating gang activity in the vicinity of Glencoe Drive and Jamacha Road when a gunman exited a white Toyota Corolla and fired several shots at him, San Diego police Lt. Manny Del Toro said. The detective was not hurt, but his car was hit several times.
Responding uniformed officers stopped the Toyota on Jamacha Road shortly afterward, but one of the occupants got out and ran, according to the lieutenant. A uniformed officer -- an 8-year San Diego Police Department veteran -- fired a shot in the suspect's direction, but he kept running.
''A patrol officer, fearing for his life and the safety of other officers, fired one round from his service weapon,'' Del Toro said. ''It is not known whether or not the suspect was injured by the gunfire.''
The suspect was not located in a subsequent search, but the Toyota's three other occupants were taken into custody. Del Toro said a handgun was found inside the car.

Two men whose names were not immediately available were booked into jail on suspicion of weapons charges and violating probation. Del Toro said it had
yet to be determined how they were involved in the shooting.
