Wet weather leads to crashes around San Diego county

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8/CNS) - The wet weather Friday morning caused several accidents across San Diego County, among those accidents were two big rig crashes.

The big rig came to a rest blocking several southbound lanes near Via De La Valle about 3:40 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. The southbound freeway was subsequently closed and vehicles were diverted off at Via De La Valle, which caused traffic to back up into Cardiff, authorities said. All lanes were back open by 9:15 a.m., according to Caltrans.

In the South Bay, a big rig slammed into a California Highway Patrol vehicle on Interstate 805 in Chula Vista, injuring the two officers inside. The officers were responding to an earlier single-vehicle crash in the slick northbound lanes near Bonita Road around 3:15 a.m., according to the CHP. The wreck left all but the carpool lane blocked until shortly before 6 a.m., authorities said.

In National City, police said a drunk driver flipped his Lexus on I-5 northbound by Mile of Cars Way. Firefighters pulled him from the car with no injuries, and he was taken into custody for DUI.

Another solo crash, involving a white mustang, rammed into the center divide on I-805 southbound and Plaza Boulevard. The driver is okay, according to police.

Since, Friday's rain could cause flash flooding in low-lying areas Friday evening, CHP officers warn drivers to practice defensive driving and take it slow.
