Hermaphrodite Dog: Rescued puppy has big surprise for veterinarian

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A rescued puppy had a big surprise for a veterinarian.

The dog is a hermaphrodite.

Gemma, is a shy three-and-a-half month puppy who was rescued along with her mother and brother from a home in Tijuana.

Gemma suffered from rickets, a deformity in her legs, but has since been cured. It was while Gemma was on the the operating table that veterinarian Ginny Bischel discovered something unusual.

"To our surprise, when we spayed her rather than pulling up ovaries we pulled up testicles. In this case, this little puppy is what we call a hermaphrodite," said Dr. Bischel.

Dr. Bischel said the last case she encountered a case like Gemma was about ten years ago.

While it remains unclear why Gemma was born the way she was, the important thing is that she is happy and healthy.

If you would like to adopt Gemma or meet her, she will be at the La Jolla Farmer's market from 9am-1pm Sunday, May 8th. The address is 7335 Girard Ave, La Jolla. Other pups up for adoption will be there as well.
