City reaffirms decision to cut down tree

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) -  A local woman is trying to save a tree she and her late husband planted more than 50-years ago because it's the last living memorial of him.

Marie Ostwald's husband died in 2005, but she said the tree is a living memorial.

"Sentimentally, I want it kept the rest of my life, and I'm 91," she said.

The city targeted the tree for removal because its roots were lifting the sidewalk.

An independent arborist said a tree planted more than 50-years ago in Allied Gardens may not have to be removed. According to Brad Brown, despite a root-trimming, the tree does not appear to be in danger of falling.

A city arborist examined the tree again on Friday and affirmed the city's decision to remove it.

The city said crews would return to remove the tree within a week.
