CHICO, Calif. (AP) - A fire official says fire crews aided by cooler weather and diminishing winds have managed to slow the spread of a massive Northern California blaze that killed at least 48 people. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott McLean said Wednesday the blaze has charred 210 square miles and that it is one-third contained. He says strong winds have subsided and humidity is up, helping more than 5,600 firefighters.

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) - People are returning to some neighborhoods evacuated during the devastating Southern California wildfire but officials say the threat is far from over. Forecasters say relentless winds that have fanned the flames could begin to diminish on Wednesday. However, officials are tempering optimism with caution, saying there are numerous hotspots and pockets of unburned vegetation.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The mass murders and suicides of more than 900 people at Jonestown in Guyana, South America, happened 40 years ago this week. Dozens of Peoples Temple members survived because they had slipped out of the remote settlement or happened to be away on Nov. 18, 1978. Those who were raised in the temple or joined as teens lost the only life they knew. They have since journeyed through grief over lost loved ones, felt like pariahs and built new lives.

WASHINGTON (AP) - A new generation of biotech foods is getting close to the grocery aisles. By early next year, the first foods made from gene-edited plants are expected to go on sale, probably salad dressings or granola bars made with soybean oil tweaked to be extra heart-healthy. The different technology aims to boost nutrition and food production. But governments are wrestling with how to regulate gene-edited foods. And whether shoppers will accept them remains a question.
