Homeless encampment may be to blame for brush fire

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Firefighters in Chula Vista got a quick handle on a brush fire that broke out there overnight.

This happened just after midnight, in a 100x100 foot area, near Interstate 5 and "E" Street.

SDG&E initially arrived on the scene, when firefighters thought a downed powerline may be to blame.

Now they think the fire may have been sparked by a homeless encampment.

"There could be other potential ignition sources as weather has indicated throughout the county as fuels are very dry and this particular area does have a lot of homeless encampments that generate these types of fires for us," Battalion Chief Sean Lowery said.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire in about an hour.
