Encinitas school board votes yoga program funds

The Encinitas Union School District Board voted to approve funding for a yoga-based health and wellness program for students.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Encinitas Union School District Board voted to approve funding for a yoga-based health and wellness program for students.

Some parents are praising the program but others believe the money would be better spent in other areas.

The school board approved $416,000 for student yoga classes.

According to the district, the yoga classes would be part of the district's physical education program needs and would provide students with tools to help with reducing stress sand attaining greater focus.

Opponents of the yoga program said the $416,000 approved could be used to reduce class sizes, but the district said that would require more money than what was proposed.

Parents argued the money could be used to hire more hourly teachers to teach core academic subjects such as as science and math. The district said it would not be educationally appropriate to assign primary teaching responsibility to less trained and less qualified teachers working in stand-alone programs.

Below is the Encinitas Union School District's information regarding the proposed Enrichment Teacher Program.
