Man steals donations for animal shelter from La Jolla store

LA JOLLA (CBS 8) - A brazen theft in La Jolla was caught on camera after surveillance footage from 'My Sister's Closet' showed a man walking up to the register and grabbing a box of donations for an animal shelter, then walking out.

The box contained at least $100 and it was intended for the Rancho Coastal Humane Society.

Randy Patterson, a sales associate at My Sister's Closet, spotted the brazen theft.

"He didn't seem that suspicious. He told several employees that he was waiting for his wife," said Patterson.

Patterson and his manager gave chase, but the suspect took off on a black mountain bike parked by the side of the store.

The Rancho Coastal Humane Society is one of the nation's highest rated charity operations among animal welfare organizations, according to spokesman John Van Zante.

The suspect was described as being in his late 30's or early 40's, and about 6 feet tall. He was wearing black shorts and a grey Henley-style shirt.

He was last seen on a black mountain bike riding westbound on Noble Drive.

Anyone with information on who the man is, is asked to call San Diego CrimeStoppers at 888-580-8477.
