SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Three lanes of Interstate 5 were shut down for hours after a motorcycle fell from the 54 transition ramp in National City Saturday, according to police.

The crash was reported on the southbound side of Interstate 5 at the transition to eastbound State Route 54 at about 12:30 p.m., according to the CHP. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

A woman in her 30s was riding southbound on I-5 between 80 and 100 miles an hour with a man in his 40s on the back.

She lost control and the two fell dozens of feet onto the shoulder of I-5 and skidded onto the shoulder. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Some witnesses say a car was chasing the bike, but officers say seconds before the crash it cut off the car and the two were still close together when they went over the shoulder.

Traffic was backed up for several hours until officers finished their investigation around 3 p.m.

No other injuries were reported, according to a CHP dispatcher. The cause was under investigation.
