Arrest made in Escondido freeway on-ramp killing

ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A San Marcos man is in custody in Nevada Tuesday following his arrest on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend, who was found dead two weeks ago in a car alongside an Escondido freeway entrance.

Edward Andrew Long, 38, was arrested during a traffic stop in Las Vegas in connection with the shooting death of Fontana resident Elizabeth Perez, according to police.

A passerby found the bloodied body of Perez, also 38, in the driver's seat of a black Mercury Sable with smashed-out driver's- and passenger-side windows next to an onramp to northbound Interstate 15 from El Norte Parkway early on the afternoon of June 13, Escondido police Lt. Ed Varso said.

An autopsy determined that Perez died of a gunshot wound to the head.

Detectives soon identified Long as a suspect in the case and entered identifying information about him into shared law enforcement databases.

The suspect was taken into custody last Tuesday while driving a borrowed car in Las Vegas. On Monday, he agreed not to contest extradition to San Diego County, Varso said.

Officials released no suspected motive for the shooting.
