Two San Diego Verizon phone stores robbed at gunpoint in two days

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Two Verizon Wireless phone stores have been robbed at gunpoint in the past two nights, and police are now searching for the assailants before they strike again.

Verizon employees were not allowed to talk on camera about the robberies, but told police Verizon corporate has put employees on notice for a surge in cellphone store robberies in Southern California.

On Monday, two men held up a Clairemont-area Verizon store at gunpoint.

The two suspects entered the Verizon store on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard near Genesee Avenue and robbed it of an undisclosed amount shortly before 9 p.m. Monday, San Diego police Sgt. David Jennings said.

A detailed suspect description was not immediately available, but police said they were dressed in dark clothing and had their sweatshirt hoods cinched around their faces.

Only 24-hours after the first robbery, another Verizon store robbery was reported in the 1100 block of Broadway in Chula Vista.

Officers were able to dust for prints and they believe the description of one of the suspects matches one of the gunman from Monday night's Verizon robbery.

According to police, $30,000 worth of cellphones was stolen. Police have not released surveillance video, but believe the violence could escalate if the crew is not stopped.

The suspects in the San Diego robbery were described to have fled in a white van, while the suspects in the Chula Vista robbery fled in a dark sedan.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
