San Diegans celebrating closer to home for holiday weekend

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Travel experts say more than three million southern California residents will take a Fourth of July vacation. Making this weekend the busiest on record!

Whether you stay in town to enjoy the big bay boom fireworks show in San Diego or have family and friends visiting, our area is a popular destination this holiday. Triple A says 43 million Americans are doing the same. Overall it's a one percent jump in the number of travelers.

That means whether you're driving or flying, prices are slightly lower this year. You can expect extra security at Lindbergh Field. After the deadly attack in Istanbul, TSA lines will be tight as you travel by air.

Law enforcement officers throughout San Diego County will be on the lookout for drunken drivers Friday and over the long Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Sheriff's deputies plan to step up patrols within their various jurisdictions today through Monday. Sheriff's department officials said their personnel arrested 16 suspected drunken drivers over the Independence Day holiday period last year, 19 the year before and 46 in 2013.
"If you're caught drinking and driving this Fourth of July weekend, you will go to jail,'' Sheriff Bill Gore said.
Police in Escondido and Chula Vista will also be out in force targeting drunken drivers. Extra Escondido police officers will be on hand for saturation patrols throughout the three-day weekend, and their counterparts in Chula Vista will staff a DUI checkpoint, authorities said.
In El Cajon, officers will close streets and control traffic around Kennedy Park, where a Fourth of July celebration will take place Monday.
El Cajon city and police officials have also launched a pedestrian safety campaign called 'Check Before You Step.'
