SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Traffic along India Street is going from bad to worse as residents deal with new congestion from an airport rental center.

According to residents, the opening of the new Rental Car Center has created an entrance and exit from the rental center which has severely impacted the the traffic flow and safety of drivers, pedestrians and most importantly, residents and businesses in the Middletown area.

There are signs directing rental car traffic onto India Street and families said the street is the only way into their neighborhood. According to residents, drivers are treating India Street like they are on Interstate-5.

Middletown residents are relieved the Uptown Planners, a community planning group, approved to work on traffic calming along India Street from the new airport car rental center.

The problem is with the Airport Authority.

The Airport Authority said diverting traffic onto Washington could take longer than three months and further added that MCRD and the Railroad Company will work with the agency and city officials on traffic calming along India Street.

Supervisor Ron Roberts who has lived in the neighborhood for 50 years wants a traffic signal at India and Redwood, but others prefer a stop sign in the residential neighborhood.

Councilman Todd Gloria's spokesperson did not comment but did say he continues to work with the community to explore feasible options.
