Chase involving water truck ends after crash in Mission Valley

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – A 25-year-old man suspected of stealing a water truck was in custody Monday after leading San Diego police officers on a chase that ended in Mission Valley when the truck crashed into a construction zone.

Authorities said the suspect stole a water truck Monday around 9:30 p.m. from a construction site on Qualcomm Way and then took off down Friars Road to Clubhouse Lane where the officers said the suspect tried to ram into an officer's patrol car.

The water truck then barreled through the parking lot of Lowe's at the Costco gas station near Northside Drive, smashing through a fence and construction zone. To help stop the chase, police put down spike strips to flatten the tires.

"The suspect drove over here into the lot of the Ikea and Lowe's parking lot where he hit objects and subsequently was taken into custody,” said Lt. Laura McLean, with the San Diego Police Department.

Police said the suspect surrendered at gunpoint, gave up peacefully and followed the officer's commands.

The suspect will face charges for stealing a vehicle, evading police and causing destruction. He’s also being tested for drugs and alcohol.
