Homeless man attacked by bicyclist downtown

San Diego police are searching for a man suspected of assaulting a transient.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An unknown assailant bludgeoned a homeless man in the East Village Wednesday morning, but police do not believe the attack was related to an unsolved series of assaults that killed three homeless men and left another gravely wounded last week.

The transient reported that a man on a blue bicycle struck him in the head with a hammer in the area of Eighth Avenue and G Street shortly before 6:30 a.m., according to San Diego police.

Medics took the victim to a hospital for an evaluation. His condition and name were not released.

Investigators were checking businesses around the crime scene to determine if any surveillance cameras captured images of the assailant, Officer Frank Cali said.
