Good Samaritan rescues woman at Ocean Beach

OCEAN BEACH (CBS 8) - A man is being called a hero after a daring rescue in Ocean Beach. Lifeguards say he risked his own life, saving a woman swept into the Ocean.

Lifeguards pulled a 51-year-old woman up a steep cliff. They say she was taking pictures at the time.

Sean Hanrahan, 25, says he was walking along the foot of Del Monte Avenue by the water's edge when he heard screams for help.

He saw she was in danger after being pulled away by a strong rip current around 8:15 last night. She had many cuts and bruises after hitting the jagged cliffs.

The Good Samaritan, Sean Hanrahan, jumped in, swam 25 yards off shore and kept the unconscious woman's head above water.

"She was getting thrashed in the waves and the breaker, so I told her to swim out--I don't know if you heard me. But, I went in and grabbed her and went past the breaks and that was about it until the lifeguards came," Hanrahan said.

Lifeguards said the woman was up against strong rip currents.

"So she was in a place with a really strong rip current. It's just a bowl along the reefs. She was pulled out," San Diego Lifeguard, Lt. John Sandmeyer, said.

After hoisting the woman to shore, lifeguards administered CPR and provided an oxygen mask.

She was rushed to the hospital and is expected to recover.
