The Cost of Cool: How much does A/C cost?

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - As San Diego heats up many residents will be relying on air-conditioning, but how low can residents go and still remain within their budget?

The more often an A/C turns on the more one will have to pay, and that is all determined by the setting on the thermostat.

SDG&E spokesperson Allison Torres said there is no quick or easy calculation to project how much a bill will increase when a thermostat is set low because each household is unique.

"It does vary, different sizes of homes, different appliances running at one time. It is hard to gauge exactly how much you're going to save, but by raising your thermostat by a few degrees, it's really going to help as far as helping the grid, but also saving money on your bill," said Torres.

According to experts, on average A/C users can save roughly one to three percent, per degree.

For example, if a thermostat is set at 68-degrees, an energy bill could be $200. Setting the thermostat at 73-degrees could drop the energy bill to $170. Increasing the temperature to the recommended 78-degrees could lower an energy bill to $140.

Another way to cut costs is to get an ecobee thermostat free from SDG&E. From a phone app, the thermostat can be controlled.
