San Diego flight diverted over 'security concerns'

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Officials with regional carrier Compass Airlines say a flight from Seattle to San Diego landed in Portland because of an unverified threat.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports that the Minneapolis-based airline said in a prepared statement that the flight was diverted to Portland because of an unspecified security concern.

The flight was carrying 58 passengers and four crew members on an Embraer 175 aircraft. According to the airline, Compass flight 5733 landed at Portland International Airport Saturday morning.

Passengers told CBS News 8 it was a "bomb threat'' that caused the Compass Airlines plane that departed from Seattle to land in Portland at 9:30 a.m.

Compass Airlines said Flight 5733 was diverted due to "security concerns,'' but offered no further details.

Passengers arrived at 3 p.m. in San Diego. Several passengers said that once in Portland they were taken off the Compass Airlines plane, which underwent a security sweep.

Once the plane was found to be safe, passengers re-boarded and the flight continued on to San Diego.

A spokeswoman for the Port of Portland says authorities are investigating the incident and did not disclose details about the type of security threat the aircraft faced.
