SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Comic-Con wrapped up the weekend's festivities Sunday with a panel about the popular Pokemon Go app as well as teasers for upcoming seasons of television shows.
Thousands of gaming fans who waited in line -- many trying to catch Pickachu on their smart phones -- were treated to a talk from Niantic CEO John Hanke, whose company created Pokemon Go. The discussion was moderated by Chris Hardwick, Nerdist website founder and AMC show host.
Hanke -- who said he had reached Level 18 on the game -- told the crowd that the response to the app has been "mindblowing.'' He mainly talked about the unexpected popularity of the app but did reveal the identity of some of the game's team leaders.
Pokemon Go fans who had heard rumors about a "legendary new character'' being unleashed during Comic Con left disappointed messages on social media following the event since Hanke did not announce the addition of any new friends for Pickachu.
Television teasers included a panel about the BBC's "Sherlock,'' which airs in the United States on PBS and will debut its latest season next year.
Today's panel about the show featured lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the legendary super-sleuth; co-star Amanda Abbington; and co-creators Mark Gattis and Steven Moffat. Many of those in attendance described the season trailer as "intense.''
Also Sunday, creators of "Supernatural'' announced that veteran rock singer and actor Rick Springfield will play Lucifer on the CW show, now entering its 12th season.
That wasn't the only surprise: During a question-and-answer session, a man asked his girlfriend to marry him.
Other major announcements included reboots of Fox network hits "24'' and "Prison Break,'' the latter of which featured a two-minute sneak peek.
Another panel during Comic-Con's last day focused on women who work for Marvel Comics. The participants discussed what it means to succeed in a male-dominated industry.
The last day of the hugely popular festival is considered somewhat low-key compared to the first three days, which featured an announcement that Oscar winner Brie Larson will play Captain Marvel in an upcoming movie.
For those who don't attend, this is the first year for Comic-Con HQ, a video on-demand service in partnership with Lionsgate that will remain free through Monday. During the four days of the event, the service will include airings of select panels, access to the convention floor, the masquerade ball and the Eisner Awards, according to Comic-Con officials.
