Rushing to save boat in trouble

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The U.S. Coast Guard came to the rescue Tuesday when a boat with three people aboard began taking on water about 12 miles southwest of Point Loma.

The occupants of the 26-foot pleasure craft issued a mayday reporting the problem about 10:30 a.m., prompting the federal maritime agency's San Diego station to dispatch an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter along with the cutter Haddock and a 45-foot response boat, according to USCG public affairs.

Upon arrival at the site of the emergency, the air crew lowered a rescue swimmer to assess the conditions of the boat and its occupants. The Haddock arrived on scene soon a short time later, and two of its crew members boarded the ailing vessel, halted the flooding and used pumps to remove the seawater it had taken on.

The Haddock then towed the recreational boat to Shelter Island.
