Five-hour SWAT standoff ends in Clairemont

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A family is still on edge Tuesday morning after a 5-hour SWAT standoff. Police say a man was holed up inside a home with two small children.

It started just after 1:00 a.m. at the 4700 block of Coconino Way. Police say a negotiator tried to get a man out of a house in Clairemont near the town square shopping center.

Police say a negotiator tried to get the man out of the house for several hours after he threatened his girlfriend with a knife and had his two young daughters holed up in the house.

CBS News 8 captured video of a suspect, who police say is Babak Akber, taken out of a home after he refused to give up for hours. A SWAT team and K-9 unit were at the scene, following repeated requests from a negotiator on a bull horn, before 4 am.
He reportedly fought with his girlfriend and threatened her with a knife.
She was able to get out safely, but his two young daughters, ages 3 and 8, were sleeping until about 3:45 Tuesday morning. A flash bang went off, which woke everyone up and they were released safely from the house.
The suspect's mother, as well as, the kids' aunts and uncles all tried to persuade him to come out.

"He was acting irrationally and we were there to make sure nothing serious happened to the kids," Captain Mark Hanten, SDPD Northern Division said.

Police say Akber will be facing domestic violence charges.
