Ocean Beach residents fight to save Torrey Pine tree

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Residents are putting up a fight as the city is expected to cut down yet another historic tree Thursday in Ocean Beach. The city says it's for safety reasons.

Neighbors at the 4600 block of Saratoga Avenue say they can't believe it's happening again.

The city says strong winds from a previous storm weakened the root system and made the trees unstable, causing a hazard in the residential area. They say the tree could fall at any moment.

Some residents are angry and say they disagree.

"The city hates these trees. They don't like them because of the curbs and the sidewalk and they look for any excuse to take them out," one neighbor said.

Two other Torrey pines were removed back in February. The 75-foot trees have been part of the community for about 80 years.

Residents complain the city hasn't gone through proper channels to ask the community what they want to done.

A member of the Ocean Beach planning board and the chair of the Ocean Beach community board contacted CBS News 8 and said they were left out of the loop by the city on their plans.
