ENCINITAS (CBS 8) - Breakfast. The most important meal of the day. However, I like to think of it as also the most tasty meal of the day and this couldn't be more true than at 101 Diner.
If you are a an eggs benedict kind of person, you should make your way to 101 Diner, located on PCH in downtown Encinitas. This diner is an old fashioned American diner with a lot of character.
However, the authenticity of this restaurant is even further demonstrated in their high-quality food. Okay, so the eggs benedict here may change your life. To quote their website: “Our Hollandaise sauce ain't no ghetto sauce. It's ho-made and sometimes we run out. Come back tomorrow. Early. Before it's gone.” The hollandaise sauce is creamy and buttery and on occasion there is even a jalapeno pepper and cilantro hollandaise that is accompanied by shaved ham and a perfectly toasted English muffin. And if you’re lucky, sometimes the “Cardiff Crack” is served as a benedict.
So, you might be wondering what on earth is this Cardiff Crack? Well, it’s a well marinated tri tip that is probably one of the tenderest meats that you will ever eat. It is seasoned with Burgundy Pepper, which is a secret spice that makes this meat so special and yet so addicting (hint the name Cardiff Crack). Cardiff Crack can be found at Seaside Market, which is where the locals shop and is located not too far from 101 Diner.
But, back to breakfast. Another place that is a local hangout is the Potato Shack. It may be a tiny establishment, but the portions are far from small.
This restaurant is known for its pancakes and they are HUGE. They are so big, in fact, that the overflow the plate they are served on is referred to as “Manhole sized”. Choose from a variety of mix-ins for your liking and maybe order a side of thick cut, crispy bacon.
There are also omelettes made to order and biscuits and gravy to satisfy your appetite. The Shack’s good food and big portions are also accompanied with friendly locals and staff.
However, Potato Shack is cash only so make sure to bring some dollars with you!
