Royal the missing horse found safe

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Royal the missing horse was found safe in Cuyamaca Saturday morning.

Royal is back home with his family. He suffered a cut on his leg, but otherwise is fine after being on his own for six days, according to his family.

Two hikers who were given a flyer and asked to keep an eye out for the missing horse phoned the base station saying they saw a horse with no tack drinking from a water trough.

Two volunteers on horseback, who were in the Dyar Spring area, gathered him up and led him back to his family.

Royal is now with Walt and Suzie Kirkwood who say they will be taking Royal to the vet back at the ranch to get checked out.

They thank everyone who participated in helping bring Royal home.

This is a Breaking News Update to previous story below.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A new reward is being offered in the search for Royal the horse who went missing in the Cuyamaca area on Sunday.

Royal disappeared after throwing his rider off and running into the brush.

"We still think he's stuck somewhere that's why we're not seeing him. Maybe he got caught on his reins or something," said Suzie Kirkwood.

For almost a week now, Suzie and Walt Kirkwood have been searching for their 10-year-old horse, and they have not lost hope.
