SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Congratulations to the 'Swell Guys Too' relay team for making history in the Catalina Channel Saturday morning.

The senior swimming group left San Pedro around 9:30 Friday night to complete a record swim from the shore to the Island. The 70-year-old and above swimmers finished in 14 hours even, under challenging conditions.

They covered just over 23 miles and averaged 1.7 miles per hour.

The team included Bill Crane, Steve Docteder, Dan Henry, Peter Tedagrew and Tony Joseph subbing in for Dave Little.

The team captain, Stephen Cross, said it was a difficult swim because the wind and swells would not let up.

"We swam all night in the dark, it was rough," Cross said.

Each swimmer took an hour on the leg of the relay from the mainland to Catalina Channel.

The oldest swimmer is 79 and the youngest is 74. All the guys say they feel good about their accomplishment and will continue to swim.
