Opponents call for improved roads before East County casino opening

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A new casino is set to open in the East County. The Hollywood Casino will open on Campo Road in Jamul amid protests from residents who call this casino a "Hollywood horror show" and say it adds traffic to a rural, two lane stretch of SR-94.

Some resident currently have an appeal in federal court and they're fighting to get the liquor license rescinded, at least until Caltrans makes the road improvements residents have been requesting. The highway that leads to SR-94 is a two lane road, which some residents refer to as a death trap and say the situation will worsen with the additional traffic that will likely be produced when the casino opens, as well as the possibility of impaired drivers.

Meanwhile, County Supervisor Dianne Jacob has written letters to Caltrans and the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, urging them to take action. The Jamul Action Committee president says this is a matter of public safety.

Caltrans has issued the following statement:

Caltrans first priority is to ensure the safety of the motoring public. Caltrans will continue to review the improvements proposed by the JIV that provide for the safe and efficient movement of traffic on State Route 94.  As is done with all new operational improvements, Caltrans will monitor the operation of the new signal at Daisy Drive in order to optimize system performance.

Jamul Indian Village has issued the following statement:

The Jamul Indian Village is wholeheartedly devoted to community safety. As such, we have committed approximately $20 million toward roadway improvements identified by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and $3.7 million toward roadway improvements identified in our Memorandum of Understanding with the County of San Diego. We have implemented immediate mitigation efforts including a traffic signal on Highway 94 directly in front of the project for the benefit of the community and casino guests. We are also coordinating with local law enforcement for special event traffic measures. This and other commitments to fire and life safety affirm our strong dedication to being a good neighbor and ensuring the best for our community.
