San Ysidro Massacre: Victim shares her story 32 years later

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A documentary on one the darkest days in San Diego history is set to premier in September.

"77 Minutes," tells the story of the victims of the massacre at a San Ysidro McDonald's in 1984.

Twenty-one people were killed that day, and 19 were wounded. Now more than 32-years later survivors have been given the chance to tell their stories.

One of the survivors sat down Tuesday with CBS News 8's Richard Allyn to share her story.

Karla Felix was only four-months-old when she and her parents became the first victims of what remains San Diego's worst mass shooting.

Karla, her mother, and her father had just gotten out of their car when a deranged man opened fire in the parking lot. All three were shot before the gunman made his way into the restaurant.

Over a period of 77 terror-filled minutes, the gunman killed 21 victims and wounded 16 others inside the restaurant.

The name of the killer will not be mentioned in the upcoming documentary, but was named after those 77 horrific-minutes.

In Karla's case, it was a perfect stranger who helped save her young life. Karla's wounded father passed her to an unknown woman in the chaos who in turn passed her to a police officer.

In the documentary Karla's mother, Maricela Flores, shared her story of survival.

Karla, who now lives and works in Washington D.C., told CBS News 8 how that pivotal day she does not even remember shaped how she now lives her life.

"I live life every day, day-by-day. I don't take things for granted," she said.

"77 Minutes," will premier September 23, at the Ultra Star in Mission Valley at Hazard Center. There are also plans to screen the film at a venue in San Ysidro.
