Man's car stolen with father's ashes inside

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Zach Johnson, 22, had just moved to San Diego and was in the process of unloading his car when it was stolen overnight with his father's ashes inside.

Johnson's father passed away three years ago after battling medical problems. What Johnson had left of his dad, namely his ashes, along with some treasured mementos were all inside his car which was stolen.

Johnson moved to San Diego just last Friday. He parked and locked his 2011 Chevy Malibu outside his new apartment building in Cortez Hill on Date Street.

"Kind of called it quits for the night. Then I went upstairs and I came out Saturday morning and my car was gone. My whole hear was in that stuff. I could not place a value on it," he said.

As the magnitude of his loss set in, Johnson called the police to file a report.

Inside his car were his father's ashes which he had kept in a special box as well as a necklace he often wore.

Among other valuables was an inscribed watch from his dad, and tickets from a special trip to Disneyland they had taken together.

Johnson also said he lost an old cell phone that he had kept solely because of the saved - and deeply personal - voice mails still on it that he had received from his father just days before he died.

"I would listen to them a lot when I was going through hard times. I just wish I had that back. I can replace the car. I can replace the clothes, but I cannot replace my dad. I just want that stuff back," he said

Johnson hopes that whoever took his car realizes how valuable, or truly invaluable, his father's ashes and those mementos are and return them to him.

Zach's car is a white 2011 Chevy Malibu with Arkansas plates.
