Veterans to ride "Coast X Coast" for the fallen

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A group of current and former special operations soldiers are preparing to embark on a cross-country journey.

Members of The Coast X Coast Foundation are raising money ahead of their third annual Ride for the Fallen cross-country trip.

It's the third annual ride for Cris Valley who founded the organization in honor of his friend Ryan Savard who was killed serving in Afghanistan.

"I think really the motive is just to help people and do my part," he said.

This year features a Gold Star father and military widow who asked to have their loved one added to the names on the support trailer.

"I think there is a difference in them asking me because I am active duty soldier so they understand that I am deploying and unfortunately have other friends that have fallen, but I am very happy to help them," said Valley.

Alexandra McClintock signed on to the ride on Memorial Day as she was grieving the loss of her husband who died serving back in January.

"I lost the great love of my life, but there is so much love felt and that is really what you look forward to - it's really healing because you spend time focusing on your wound," she said.

The group is planning ten stops across the country on their way to Arlington National Cemetery. At each stop they will sell raffle tickets to win a Harley and collect donations.

This year, the money will go to Special Operations Forces Health Initiatives - to help those suffering PTSD and traumatic brain injuries.
