SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Students heading back to school in North County will notice big changes on campus as the Encinitas Union School District switches to solar power. Construction was finished over the summer break.

Construction of six solar projects for the Encinitas Union School District were completed this week by locally-headquartered solar firm, Sullivan Solar Power

“We are proud to help Encinitas Unified School District declare energy independence, allowing the District to reinvest solar savings in their students, supporting a brighter future for our next generation,” said Daniel Sullivan, founder and president of Sullivan Solar Power.

The entire district has now gone solar with Park Dale Lane, Capri, Ocean Knoll, La Costa Heights, El Camino Creek and Flora Vista Elementary Schools the latest schools now powered by solar energy.

"While we expect to see financial savings, the installation of these solar panels allows us to do much more than merely save money on electricity," said Dr. Timothy Baird, Encinitas Union School District Superintendent.

The solar systems consist of industry-leading SunPower solar panels and American-made SMA America inverters, which will assist the District in achieving their clean energy goals. The installation will provide local greenhouse gas reduction benefits, offsetting over 3 million pounds of carbon dioxide each year.
