SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Bishop Robert McElroy of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego celebrated mass in a Southcrest church Sunday evening, in honor of Mother Teresa of Calcutta being canonized a saint Sunday by Pope Francis in Rome.

The bilingual English/Spanish mass got underway at 5 p.m. at St. Jude Shrine of the West Catholic Church on Boston Avenue at 38th Street.

In 1992, Mother Teresa purchased a home near the parish to establish a contemplative home for the Missionaries of Charity, according to the church's website.

She was in residence briefly in 1996 and attended Mass there on June 9 of that year. The event was commemorated with a granite stone placed outside the parish building.

"The whole of Mother Teresa's life and labor of love bore witness to the joy of loving, the greatness and dignity of every human person, the value of little things done faithfully and with love, and the surpassing worth of friendship with God,'' the statement said.
