EL CAJON (CBS 8/CNS) - Friends, family and fellow Grossmont High School students are mourning the loss of senior Ryan Wilcox who died of leukemia over the weekend.

Grossmont students are planning to wear red, white and blue Tuesday in honor of the 18-year-old's fondness for Captain America.

Wilcox made national headlines in May when he was visited at his El Cajon home by the cast of the Avengers movies.

Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Evans visited Ryan at his El Cajon home after reading about him on social media.

The actors, who portray Iron Man, Pepper Potts and Captain America, respectively, paid a surprise visit to Wilcox and spent the afternoon visiting, taking pictures and giving autographs.

A candlelight vigil was held for the senior Monday night, the terminally ill teen died Saturday of complications from leukemia.

Memorial plans are pending.
