ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) - A piece of The World Trade Center was placed in North County as part of a ceremony that took place Friday to honor first responders and in memory of the lives lost during the September 11, terrorist attacks.
"Tonight is an extra special night because we are remembering the lives lost in the 9/11 attacks," said Escondido Fire Department Chief Russ Knowles.
Each year the event attracts nearly 10,000 people.
Other scheduled events commemorating the anniversary of the attacks include the annual San Diego 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, one of about 30 similar climbs nationwide, at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront on Saturday morning; and a memorial ceremony at Centennial Plaza in El Cajon on Sunday morning.
