Stress-relieving dogs help sooth weary travelers

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Traveling is not always smooth sailing, but some four-legged friends are helping people at Lindbergh Field by taking some of the edge off.

Therapy dogs are on patrol in the terminals lending a paw to help frustrated fliers de-stress.

The airport's therapy dog program was launched in the fall of 2014 with 20 dogs of all shapes and sizes.

San Diego's airport is one of 30 across the country with a therapy dog program.

"We know that flying is not what it used to  be and so having the dogs here can sometimes settle anxious passengers and entertain passengers that are delayed," said Sharon Laspada, a Ready, Pet Go handler.

Harley is one of the 20 dogs who gets receives pats and kisses from about 200 passengers during a two-hour shift.

"He loves people. He loves the activities in the commotion of the airport," said Laspada.

The airport's Ready Pet, Go program partners with Traveler's Aid Society and Therapy Dogs Inc.
