Police set up game to improve community relations

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Local police hit the court Wednesday to take on parents and teachers in a friendly basketball game at St. Columba Catholic Elementary - the goal of the matchup was to improve community relations. 

The San Diego Police Department's eastern division has built a 25-year relationship with St. Columba Elementary, and with the help of the YMCA they have built community and trust. 

Wednesday's match was played by police, parents and teachers - giving students an opportunity to see officers outside of a patrol car. 

"The youth is very important. They are our future. For them to see us as normal everyday people out of the uniform is huge," said police officer Victor Rodriguez. 

On Wednesday night, St. Columba who went home with the title - winning 31 to 30. 

Redemption is already in the books. The school and police plan to move their game from the court to the diamond for a softball game. 

They also plan to make the 5-5 basketball game a tradition.
