SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diego State University students protested Thursday afternoon after a video of a controversial arrest on campus surfaced on social media.

In the video, campus police officers forcefully detained a black man.

According to the university, police officers responded and ultimately arrested a non-student at the student union.

In a statement the university said multiple people had reported they had seen the individual acting erratically on campus and was seen jumping the construction fence at the Open Air Theater.

Upon arrival, officers at the scene determined the person appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

In their attempt to arrest the person, he resisted and the officers restrained him until backup could arrive.

However, in the video the person is heard yelling - "I am not resisting arrest. You are breaking my arm."

Two officers held the individual on the grown with their knees to his back.

According to the statement by the university, the individual was uninjured and was transported to the San Diego County Jail.

The calling of backup is required any time an officer is engaged in a physical confrontation. Several more officers arrived on the scene to assist with the arrest. The arrested individual is uninjured and was transported to the San Diego County Jail.

On Thursday afternoon SDSU students demonstrated against what they considered a violent arrest.

The university said The Division of Student Affairs, University Police and Associated Students will be reaching out to student organizations and other campus groups to continue dialogue and expand existing programming around this important issue.

The university said the incident will be evaluated and reviewed by the field supervisor, a lieutenant, a use-of-force expert and the Chief of Police.
