Suspicious package shuts down trolley service to Qualcomm Stadium

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Trolley service at the Qualcomm Stadium station was shut down for more than an hour this afternoon due to a suspicious package that was later deemed safe, according to authorities.

San Diego Fire Rescue bomb squad personnel were called to the scene at about 2:30 p.m. due to the discovery of a "suspicious package" in the abundance of caution, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said.

The San Diego Chargers were about an hour into their NFL home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, when first responders were called to the
area.

San Diego Police officers and the Metropolitan Transit Service both responded to the scene. MTS reported that passengers were bused from the area and were allowed to resume their trolley ride from stations east and west of that location, causing travelers about a 20 minute delay.

An MTS tweet indicated that normal service on the green line had resumed between the Fenton and Mission stations. Fans leaving the Chargers game were not expected to be delayed by the incident.
