SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - First responders and others who go above and beyond to serve San Diego County were honored Tuesday in Escondido.

The Hero Awards honored the dedicated officers, administrators, and community volunteers who have gone above and beyond in their duties.

At this year's awards ceremony, a special tribute was held for San Diego Officer Jonathan De Guzman who was shot and killed in the line of duty back in July, and for the first time officer Jonathan's teenage son, who was named after him, talked about what life has been like since his father was killed.

"It's hard of course. There are days I think I'm fine, but then there's times when I'm home and it feels weird - I just know that my dad isn't there anymore," he said.

Officer De Guzman's family all accepted an award on his behalf. JD said the San Diego Police Department has gone above and beyond for his family.

"When he passed people would come up to my family my mom they would tell these stories about how they admire him," said JD.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman, San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore, Fire Chief Brian Fennessy, and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis recognized and thanked first reponders who make the San Diego community a safe place to live, play, and do business.

The man accused of killing De Guzman is 52-year-old ex-con Jesse Michael Gomez. If convicted, he could face the death penalty. A motive has not been released.
