Shooting in El Cajon leaves one person injured

EL CAJON (CNS) - A fight on a downtown El Cajon roadside ended Friday in a shooting that left a man with a non-life-threatening wound.

The dispute erupted about 12:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Decker Street, where a small gathering of people were signing up for free cellphones at a temporary kiosk set up on the sidewalk, according to police.

As the altercation escalated, two of the involved men left and walked to a nearby parked vehicle, where one of them retrieved a pistol, Lt. Steve Kirk said. They then returned to the group, and one of them fired at least two rounds, one of which struck a third man in the leg.

The shooter and his cohort then returned to the car, described only as a dark-colored sedan, and fled, the lieutenant said.

By the time police arrived, the victim had been driven away by a friend. Officers contacted him later at a hospital.

It was unclear what prompted the violence.

"The reason for the fight and subsequent shooting are under investigation at this time," Kirk said in the late afternoon.
