Why do they keep giving us the Yellow Pages?

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A waste of paper and a waste of time, but unsubscribing from the Yellow Pages may be easier said than done.

Many are wondering why the Yellow Pages are still around, but for for an older generation, the big and heavy books served as the main connection to businesses.

Tina Johnson said she just threw one in her recycling bin this week, and plenty of abandoned copies could be seen on driveways throughout Clairemont.

Yellow pages has the ability to track many of its ads. For example, one company in San Diego receives around 200 new leads a month - directly from being in these books.

A representative said they do something called selective distribution - to try and prevent books from going to homes of young people who clearly embrace modern technology.

Those who get the book and don't want it can opt out by going online. Doing so requires giving the company your address, your email information and your phone number, and they admit they just might call you.

You can submit your information online to unsubscribe from receiving the Yellow Pages.
