Firefighters battle brush fire north of Escondido

A fire broke out in Vista Sunday morning off Interstate 15 near Gofer Canyon Road.

BONSALL (CBS 8/CNS) - Firefighters have contained 70 percent of a 28-acre fire that broke out Sunday morning north of Escondido off Interstate 15 near Gopher Canyon Rd. The fire prompted authorities to temporarily shut down all lanes of I-15, leading to major traffic delays Sunday.

The Gopher Canyon Fire was first reported at 11:05 a.m., north of the Gopher Canyon and Champagne Boulevard exit. It burned 10 acres in 90 minutes, and was threatening eight homes at 12:35 p.m., Cal Fire spokesman Isaac Sanchez said.

By 2:45 p.m., the fire was reported at 28 acres and 50 percent contained.

Northbound traffic on Interstate 15 was stopped five miles north of Escondido, at Gopher Canyon. It  was reopened at about 1:50 p.m., while southbound traffic remained blocked at the Old U.S. 395 off-ramp, south of Bonsall, until about 2:30 p.m. when three lanes were reopened.

Old U.S. 395 next to the freeway was also closed north of Champagne Acres, CHP officers said.

About seventy firefighters responded to the blaze, Cal Fire officials said. No official evacuations were ordered.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. One firefighter was injured and no structures were damaged.
