Poway unity rally strives to heal wounds of division

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Poway High School's principal, teachers, counselors and students hold a unity rally early Friday morning, not to take sides in the recent election, but to heal from it.

CBS News 8's Gene Kang is live at the rally getting reactions from students.

The demonstration comes after reports of bullying, and people being targeted because of race, religion or political beliefs.

Poway school officials are warning parents about cases of bullying in the district although specific schools weren't named. The acting superintendent of Poway Unified said in part:

Unfortunately, since the recent presidential election, a few of our staff and students have recently been targeted because of their race, religion, or political beliefs, creating an unsafe learning and working environment. Our students cannot learn when they are afraid or bullied and I know I speak for our full community in saying this cannot continue.

Friday morning's rally had several speakers sharing positive messages. They include the Poway High principal, a teacher and counselor. Plus, the presidents of the Student Advisory Board, Black Student Union, Gender Sexuality Union and ASB.

Poway school officials say they're committed to giving all their students a safe place to learn.
