Sweetwater Channel: Body found in water identified

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - The body of a man who was missing for four days after getting into a car crash on a freeway bridge over the Sweetwater Channel was found floating in the South Bay waterway Friday.

A person fishing near the connector between westbound state Route 54 and southbound Interstate 5 made the discovery about 10:30 a.m., according to Chula Vista police.

Law enforcement dive-team members recovered the body from the water, getting it ashore in the early afternoon, Lt. Fritz Reber said.

Investigators were able to identify the dead man via "evidence at the scene," Reber said, declining to elaborate. The lieutenant said he also could not immediately release the victim's name.

The crash on the elevated roadway near Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge occurred about 1:30 a.m. Monday, according to police. When California Highway Patrol officers and emergency crews arrived to aid the two involved motorists, one of them was nowhere to be found.

The absent man's family subsequently filed a missing-person report, Reber said.
