Fatal head-on crash on SR-67 in Ramona

RAMONA (CNS) - Four women were injured Monday, one fatally, in a collision between two SUVs on a rain-slick road near Dos Picos County Park.

The accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m., when an 18-year-old motorist driving too fast for the wet conditions lost control of her southbound 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer on state Route 67 in the Ramona area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle, which was traveling at about 60 mph, began sliding sideways across the pavement and crossed directly into the path of an oncoming 2016 Hyundai Tucson driven by a 25-year-old woman, CHP public-affairs Officer Kevin Pearlstein said.

The resulting broadside crash near Cloudy Moon Drive left both drivers injured along with two passengers in the Hyundai, ages 26 and 54.

Medics took the women, all of them Ramona residents, to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where the oldest of the four was pronounced dead. Her name was withheld pending family notification.

The wreck left the rural roadway fully blocked for about an hour, after which authorities were able to open the southbound lanes and begin directing vehicles through the area. The northbound side of the route was cleared about 2:45 p.m., according to the CHP.
