High life living in Tijuana

TIJUANA (CBS 8) - Luxury condos starting at $80,000 are popping up just a few miles away from downtown San Diego, enticing those who work in San Diego to consider more affordable options south of the border.

More than 50 high-rise residential projects are in the pipeline in Tijuana, giving the city an economic boost it has never seen.

Maricarmen Castellanos, CEO of Probien, is a sales and marketing real estate broker working with construction crews, architects and developers to meet the sky-high housing demand.

"It's very exciting to see economic growth and see new generations that want to stay here and make a home in the city," she said.

A 1200-square-foot, three bedroom, two-and-a-half bath condominium in Tijuana goes for about $300,000.

For those who want something smaller, there's Adamant, a property development that caters to the younger, hipper generation desiring luxury living along with the nightlife.

Some of the new owners of the condos are part of the estimated 40,000 people living in Mexico and working in San Diego.

Retail development is also keeping up with demand. Bajalta is a 300 condo development that will boast a huge mall featuring American stores, restaurants, a theater and cultural center.

Tijuana is on track to have more than 2,000 new condo units by the year 2020.
