New freeway connectors ease border congestion

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Millions of drivers who use the Otay Mesa border are about to have easier access to the South Bay Expressway.

On Wednesday, SANDAG officials met at Otay Mesa and Harvest Roads to announce they've finished construction on three freeway connectors.

Interstate 905 will be linked to the 11 and northbound 125. It will fill a missing link by providing a better route for drivers exiting the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

Prior to the reconstruction, traffic went through local streets to connect to the South Bay Expressway. Last year, the border entry had nearly 8 million northbound vehicle crossings.

This project will also be a vital part of the "South Bay Rapid Project," which will provide new MTS bus service from the border to Downtown San Diego in 2018, a 26 mile route worth $128 million.

The new connectors will benefit commuters in Southern San Diego and Eastern Chula Vista. They have the option of avoiding congestion on the I-805 and the I-5 by going east on the I-905 and north on the 125.
