Driver and passenger rescued from wreck on I-5

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A horrific accident on Interstate 5 in Carmel Valley left a driver and his passenger trapped Wednesday night.

California Highway Patrol said the BMW was speeding north on I-5 between Sorrento Valley and State Route-56 when it veered west and bounced off the median.

After bouncing off the median, the BMW hit and slid down a guardrail before hitting another car.

According to San Diego Fire, the BMW driver was easily extricated, but the passenger had his legs trapped. The car's roof had to be taken off to pull the two men out.

"We always try to put a firefighter in the car to reassure the patient we are going to get him out and to do an initial assessment of the patient," said Battalion Chief David Connor, San Diego Fire Rescue.

Both the driver and the passenger were taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital to be treated for major trauma injuries.

CHP said the driver in the car that was hit was not injured.

It took CHP about two hours to reopen all lanes on I-5.
